The Jared Company, a leading creator of smartphone apps, has released what may be the most useful free app for the forgetful Blackberry® user—Last Ditch Beacon sends an email with the last-known location of the Blackberry, when the battery is down to 10 percent.
According to JaredCo, 30 percent of lost or misplaced Blackberry smartphones have dead batteries. Most tracking apps need to communicate with the device in order to find them, which is impossible once the battery is drained.
Using the Blackberry GPS, Last Ditch Beacon sends an email with the last known location of the device, even if it’s low on juice—complete with a Google map link showing the approximate location.
Other features of Last Ditch Beacon:
We just released results of a survey of nearly 6,000 customers using our apps for BlackBerry® smartphones. The responses show a high degree of loyalty to the BlackBerry brand.
Those surveyed include customers who have downloaded and purchased one or more of his company’s apps for BlackBerry smartphones and are subscribed to the JaredCo mailing list. Most are from the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as other countries where the BlackBerry App World™ storefront is available.
“At The Jared Company we design apps to make BlackBerry and other smartphones more powerful, indispensable tools in people’s lives,” said JaredCo founder and CEO Steven Kader said. “We believe the results of this survey of our customers demonstrate we’ve been on target in creating BlackBerry apps that provide BlackBerry customers improved functionality, productivity and utility in their devices.”

Of the respondents, 39.74 percent have been using a BlackBerry smartphone for the past three to five years, and 27.41 percent for more than five years.

In spite of all its troubles, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has something to celebrate — its app store, the BlackBerry App World, has passed 3 billion downloads.
"BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook users around the world have downloaded over three billion apps since BlackBerry App World launched!" RIM said in a blog post Friday. "Three billion app downloads averages out to over 2.5 million downloads each day."
It took BlackBerry users just over three years to hit that mark, installing apps for devices such as the BlackBerry Bold 9930, Torch 9860, and the PlayBook tablet. The BlackBerry App World launched in April 2009, and currently has about 90,000 apps available for BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook tablet.
RIM said that the number of daily app downloads continues to increase. BlackBerry users downloaded the first billion apps in just over two years. About seven months later, the App World reached 2 billion downloads. Users downloaded the remaining billion apps in the past six months.
Apple's App Store, in comparison, hit 3 billion downloads in less than 18 months and reached the 25 billion app download mark in March. Google's Android Market reached 3 billion in about 27 months, and Microsoft's Windows Phone marketplace has yet to hit that mark.

The most common email we get to our support desk is from people that have lost apps they purchased and they want to have them replaced without having to buy them again. This happens sometimes when you upgrade the device Operating System without a back-up of the 3rd party apps, or you get a new device entirely.
There are ways to get replacements for your apps that you have purchased without buying them again.
If you purchased your apps form BlackBerry App World, then open up App World and go to “My World” (the button on the far right of the App World main screen), click your device Menu button and select “LOG IN”. After you LOG IN (using your paypal log in information), all the apps you purchased should be there for re-installation.
If you bought the app from another site, log into your account on that site, if necessary update your new device information which will include your new device PIN number, you will then be able to get your apps re-sent to you for download and installation. Most sites have policies on the number of times you can get your apps sent to new devices you get.
If you have difficulty with this process then you should contact the support team at the site you purchased the apps from.
